Outdoor Kitchen Remodeling Project Overview

  • Client Profile: Residential Homeowner
  • Location: Mountain Top, PA (Luzerne County)
  • Client Goal(s) for Project: The client wanted to create an outdoor kitchen space that was an extension of their home, and provided additional space for entertaining. But it needed to withstand the elements and retain its beauty, and allow for several types of outdoor cooking apparatuses.
  • Designer: Dave Lynch
  • Kitchen Style: Shaker Outdoor Kitchen (remodel)
  • Specific Challenges: The client needed space for both a grill and a Big Green Egg smoker, with an additional cooktop. They also needed storage and a sink, and enough space for seating/entertaining.
  • Solution: We installed a dual height countertop to accommodate the Big Green Egg smoker, and used cabinets with storage underneath the various cooktops–all positioned off the wall of the house for safety. The sink is nestled against the house, but positioned to provide ample clear countertop areas and easy workflow around the space. An island serves two purposes as well–counter seating and additional storage, and provides definition in the space between the kitchen and an additional seating area. We also used stainless steel cabinet hardware to prevent rust and durability.
  • Cabinet Details: Composite, Inset construction, Shaker door style
  • Storage Solutions: Pull-Out Trash Bins, Deep Drawers, Cabinets to Hide Fuel Supply
  • Countertop Details: Granite material, Zurich color, Eased (straight) edge treatment
  • Products Used: Open Air Composite Sanibel Indigo, Zurich Granite

With the right layout and design, an outdoor kitchen can be the focal point of your outdoor living space.

In this project, we customized the kitchen to accommodate a grill, a Big Green Egg smoker, and an additional cooktop. The island provided extra counter space and storage, while the sink was positioned for easy workflow. Each detail was carefully planned to perfectly cater to the homeowner’s needs.

Choosing Durable Cabinets and Countertops

For an outdoor kitchen, choosing durable materials is critical for longevity. We selected Open Air Composite Sanibel Indigo cabinetry, known for its ability to withstand the elements while preserving their beauty. The cabinet details included a Composite Inset construction with a Shaker door style. The countertops were made of Granite in Zurich color, with an Eased edge treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to have an outdoor kitchen built? The cost of building an outdoor kitchen can vary widely depending on factors such as the size, materials used, amenities included, and labor costs. On average, a basic outdoor kitchen with a grill, countertop, and some storage can start around $5,000 to $10,000. However, if you’re looking for a more elaborate setup with features like a built-in refrigerator, sink, outdoor oven, seating area, and custom materials like granite countertops or natural stone, the cost can easily escalate to $20,000 or more. It’s essential to carefully consider your budget and priorities before beginning construction. Additionally, remember to factor in any necessary permits, landscaping, and utility connections, which can also affect the overall cost.

What to consider when building an outdoor kitchen? When building an outdoor kitchen, there are several important factors to consider:

Location: Choose a location that is convenient and functional. Consider factors such as proximity to the house, prevailing winds, sunlight exposure, and access to utilities like water and electricity.

Layout and Design: Plan the layout of your outdoor kitchen to optimize functionality and aesthetics. Consider the workflow from preparation to cooking to serving. Incorporate features like countertops, storage cabinets, and seating areas.

Materials: Select materials that can withstand outdoor elements and are easy to clean and maintain. Common materials for outdoor kitchens include stainless steel, stone, concrete, and weather-resistant wood.

Appliances: Choose high-quality appliances designed for outdoor use, such as grills, smokers, refrigerators, and sinks. Consider the size and type of appliances based on your cooking preferences and the size of your outdoor space.

Ventilation: Proper ventilation is essential to remove smoke, heat, and odors from the cooking area. Install a vent hood or canopy above the grill to ensure good airflow and minimize smoke accumulation.

Utilities: Ensure access to water, electricity, and gas lines for your outdoor kitchen. Hire a professional to install or extend utility lines safely and according to local building codes.

Safety: Incorporate safety features into your outdoor kitchen design, such as fire extinguishers, proper lighting, and non-slip flooring. Follow safety guidelines for the installation of gas lines and electrical wiring.

Shelter and Shade: Consider adding a pergola, canopy, or roof structure to provide shelter from sun, rain, and other weather conditions. This will make your outdoor kitchen more comfortable and usable year-round.

Landscape: Blend your outdoor kitchen seamlessly with the surrounding landscape by incorporating natural elements like plants, trees, and decorative hardscaping.

Budget and Maintenance: Set a realistic budget for your outdoor kitchen project, taking into account the cost of materials, appliances, labor, and ongoing maintenance. Plan for regular cleaning, inspection, and repairs to keep your outdoor kitchen in top condition.

How long do outdoor kitchens last? The longevity of an outdoor kitchen depends on factors such as the materials used, climate conditions, and maintenance. Typically, well-built outdoor kitchens can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years or even longer with proper care. High-quality materials like stainless steel, stone, and durable woods can contribute to their longevity. However, exposure to harsh weather elements, lack of maintenance, and inferior materials can shorten their lifespan. Regular cleaning, sealing, and protecting surfaces from moisture can help extend the life of an outdoor kitchen.
