The homeowners in Dallas, PA had a vision for their kitchen renovation: a seamlessly integrated, open-concept kitchen and dining areas to be spaces where friends and family could gather comfortably, while creating clean contemporary farmhouse style charm that was functional, visually pleasing and modern. With Mariotti Building Products and designer Clark Herron, they discovered the perfect partner to bring their contemporary farmhouse kitchen to vibrant life.

• Solution: Installed two islands–one standard with counter seating to maximize storage, and one with a waterfall countertop edge that functions as a dining table but flows with the entire space. Ample open concept shelving complemented by pantry style cabinets that house the refrigerator and provide a lot of storage. Additional storage also built into the dining/seating island.

Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel Plan

To fulfill the client’s vision, designer Clark Herron tackled the seating issue first, opting for a large, multifunctional island in the kitchen. The island housed sleek stools for casual dining and quick breakfasts, immediately enhancing the seating capacity without cluttering the area. The island also provided ample storage space.

In the dining space, Herron opted for a second island — one with a waterfall countertop edge that functions as a dining table. Surrounded by minimalist chairs, the area will accommodate large gatherings without compromising on style or space.

Creating a seamless look across the kitchen and dining spaces while maintaining their individuality was the real challenge. The goal was twofold: to create an area that offered enough storage space for various kitchen needs, yet maintain an uncluttered and airy atmosphere that spoke volumes about modern elegance and comfort.

to achieve this, ample open shelving was integrated in the design. The practical pantry-style cabinets served a dual purpose. They discreetly housed the refrigerator, keeping it in line with the cabinetry for a sleek, uniform look. These pantry cabinets also provided a wealth of storage, making it easy to keep the kitchen tidy and organized.

Storage and Functionality

In a bid to construct a space that radiated a traditional charm with a decidedly modern twist, minimalist Shaker style cabinets with Rift Oak doors were purposefully chosen. The painted cabinets added a layer of sophisticated simplicity and elevated the entire look, rendering it undeniably modern.

The choice of inset construction further enhanced the rustic appeal. The natural finish of the Rift Oak subtly flaunted the striking patterns intrinsic to the wood, marrying effortlessly with the painted cabinets to create a sight to behold.

A variety of innovative storage solutions were used to optimize organization and efficiency in the kitchen.

Deep Drawer Organizers were incorporated to make it easier for the homeowner to store and access a range of kitchenware. The organizers ensured every utensil had a designated place, eliminating clutter and creating a more streamlined cooking experience.

The addition of Pull-Out Trash Bins further contributed to the kitchen’s sleek, clean look. Cleverly concealed within the cabinetry, these bins were both convenient and discreet, promoting an uncluttered and tidy kitchen environment.

A dedicated Coffee Bar Station was introduced, providing a specialized nook for coffee-making essentials. This not only cleared valuable counter space but also created a focal point within the kitchen.

Pantry Cabinets provided essential storage for dry goods, and kitchen appliances. Their design ensured a wealth of storage space, while maintaining a sleek, unbroken line of cabinetry that was in keeping with the kitchen’s modern farmhouse feel.

Finally, the Microwave was thoughtfully placed within the Island. This placement kept the microwave not only accessible but out of sight, maintaining the clean lines of the kitchen.

Countertop Detail

The countertop selection was a crucial part of the kitchen design. Granite, known for its durability and aesthetic appeal, was the material of choice. Calacatta color, with its cream-white base and dramatic grey veining, lent an air of luxury and sophistication to the space. This subtle yet impactful color palette flawlessly complemented the neutral tones of the kitchen, while providing a delightful point of contrast.

How the edges of the countertop were treated was another key design detail. An Eased edge treatment was chosen, prioritizing clean lines and simplicity. This edge profile, with its slight rounding, blended seamlessly with the overall design, adding to the kitchen’s contemporary appeal.

For a touch of drama and refinement, a Waterfall edge was incorporated on the ends of the dining room island. This design detail, where the countertop material extends down the sides of the island, created a beautiful flowing effect. The Waterfall edge was not just visually stunning but also added an extra layer of protection to the island’s cabinetry.
